General Ultrasound Jobs

Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood flow through various vessels. Ultrasound procedures are often used to examine many parts of the body such as the abdomen, breasts, female pelvis, prostate, scrotum, thyroid and parathyroid, and the vascular system. During pregnancy, ultrasounds are performed to evaluate the development of the fetus.

A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays. CT scans also minimize exposure to radiation.

MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging Jobs

MMRI is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radiofrequencies and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. An MRI is often used for the following:

  • To examine the heart, brain, liver, pancreas, male and female reproductive organs and other soft tissues
  • To assess blood flow
  • To detect tumors and diagnose many forms of cancer
  • To evaluate infections
  • To assess injuries to bones and joints

Nuclear Medicine Jobs

Nuclear medicine is a specialized area of radiology that uses very small amounts of radioactive materials, or radiopharmaceuticals, to examine organ function and structure. Nuclear-medicine imaging is a combination of many different disciplines, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer technology and medicine. This branch of radiology is often used to help diagnose and treat abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease, such as thyroid cancer.

  • Tracheostomy tubes (a special type of breathing tube for patients unable to breathe through their mouth and nose) and oxygen therapy
  • Ventilators (machines that breathe for patients with certain conditions, such as spinal cord injuries, who are unable to breathe on their own)
  • Chronic heart or lung problems that require breathing treatments and assistance

Respiratory therapists obtain their CRT after passing a national exam.

Polysomnographer

Monitors patients while they are asleep and records brain activity. They use this information to assist with sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Histologist

Medical scientist who specializes in histology - the science of identifying the structure of cells, tissues and organs in relation to their function. A microscope is used to make the identification of the structure of cells, tissues and organs. The main use of histology in medicine is to identify the type of disease present in patients. A histologist is able to identify abnormal cells that represent disease because he/she is familiar with how normal and abnormal cells should appear under a microscope.

Medical Laboratory Technologist
